Old pipe
Pipe repair in Cortez, FL for homes with a long history
In a village this old, the question is often not whether a pipe will fail but which one fails next.
Calls for pipe repair in Cortez, FL usually come from homes still running on their original plumbing. Some cottages near 119th Street West are among the oldest occupied houses in the county, and their supply lines may be galvanized steel or even lead, both of which should be replaced rather than patched indefinitely.
Galvanized pipe rusts from the inside, which slowly closes the bore and shows up as weak pressure and discolored water. Old cast iron drains crack along the bottom where waste sits. Aging copper develops pinholes, helped along by hard water inside and damp, salty soil outside. A leak in one spot is often a sign of wear across the whole run, and hidden pinholes are best confirmed with leak detection in Cortez before walls are opened.
We start by identifying what you have, then talk through realistic choices. Our pipe repair and replacement services page explains the full range of work we take on.

Pipe materials we find in Cortez homes
Galvanized steel
Gray threaded pipe common in older homes. Corrodes internally, restricts flow and is a strong candidate for replacement.
Lead
Dull gray, soft pipe found in some very old supply lines. It should be replaced, and we can confirm whether any is present.
Copper
Long-lived, but older copper can pinhole from hard water and corrosive soil. Spot repairs work when the rest is healthy.
Cast iron drains
Heavy black drain pipe that scales inside and cracks with age. Sections can be replaced with PVC.
Your options
Spot repair or whole-home repipe?
We lay out both honestly. Sometimes a repair is plenty; sometimes it is money spent on a pipe that will fail again next month.
Spot repair
- One failed section in otherwise sound pipe
- Fast and minimally disruptive
- Lower cost today
- Best for newer copper or PEX systems
Partial or full repipe
- Galvanized or lead supply anywhere in the house
- Repeated pinhole leaks in different spots
- Low pressure throughout the home
- Can be phased room by room to spread the work
Repipe pricing without surprises
A repipe price depends on the size of the house, how many fixtures it serves and how easy the walls and crawlspace are to reach. We walk the home, then give you an upfront price you approve before work begins, including permits and patching we are responsible for. Call (941) 541-7473 for a free phone estimate to start.

Cortez questions
Pipe Repair and Replacement in Cortez: common questions
Should I repair or repipe my older Cortez home?
If the house still has galvanized or lead supply, or you have had several leaks in different places, a repipe is usually the better long-term value. If the problem is a single failure in otherwise healthy copper or PEX, a spot repair is fine. We show you what we found and let you decide with the full picture.
How can I tell if my home has lead or galvanized pipe?
Look where the water line enters the house or at exposed pipe under a sink. Galvanized pipe is gray with threaded joints, and a magnet will stick to it. Lead is dull gray, soft enough to scratch easily with a key, and a magnet will not stick. If you are unsure, we can identify it on a visit. If a pipe has already burst, call our Cortez emergency plumbing line first.
Is PEX or copper better for a coastal home?
Both are good choices. PEX resists corrosion, handles hard water well and needs fewer joints, which makes it popular for repiping older homes. Copper is very durable and preferred by some owners. Near the bay, we protect any exposed metal from salt air either way, and we explain the trade-offs before you choose.
How disruptive is a whole-house repipe?
Less than most people expect. New lines are routed through attics, crawlspaces and walls with small access openings, and water is usually restored at the end of each working day. We plan the sequence with you, keep work areas covered and clean, and handle the permit and inspection.
