How disposals work
What garbage disposal repair services usually fix
A disposal is a motor, a spinning plate and a few seals. Most failures come down to one of those three.
Under the sink, the motor spins a plate fitted with small swinging impellers that fling food against a grinding ring. The ground waste washes into the sink drain with the running water. When something hard wedges between the plate and the ring, the motor hums but cannot turn. When a seal or gasket wears out, water drips from the unit. When the motor overheats, an internal switch cuts power until you press the reset button.
Our garbage disposal repair services start by sorting out which of those is happening and whether the problem is really the disposal at all. A sink that drains slowly with the disposal running is often a clog in the drain line beyond it, which is a different repair.
Hard water across Manatee, Sarasota and Pinellas counties also plays a part. Mineral scale builds up on the grinding chamber and in the drain trap, and corrosion on older units shows up as rust stains around the bottom housing.

Symptoms
Signs your disposal needs professional attention
- A steady hum when switched on, but no grinding
- No sound at all, even after pressing the red reset button
- Water dripping from the bottom of the unit rather than a pipe joint
- The reset button trips repeatedly within a few uses
- Grinding that sounds like metal on metal
- A bad smell that remains after cleaning
- Water backing up into the other sink bowl or the dishwasher
Common repairs
What we repair on a garbage disposal
Jams and stuck flywheels
We free the grinding plate, remove the object causing the jam and check that the impellers still swing freely.
Leaking connections
Leaks at the sink flange, dishwasher inlet or drain outlet are usually loose fittings or tired gaskets, and are often repairable.
Electrical and reset issues
A disposal that keeps tripping may be overloaded, failing, or wired to a switch or outlet with a problem we can identify.
Clogged drain lines
Ground food that settles in the trap or line beyond it causes backups. We clear the line, not just the disposal.
Odors and buildup
Food film and scale inside the chamber and baffle create persistent smells. We clean what can be cleaned and replace worn splash guards.
Repair or replace
When to repair a disposal and when to replace it
Repair usually makes sense when
- The unit is jammed but the motor runs freely once cleared
- The leak is at the sink flange, drain or dishwasher connection
- The problem is a clog downstream of the disposal
- The unit is relatively new and otherwise works well
Replacement is usually better when
- Water leaks from the body of the unit itself
- The motor is seized or burned out
- Rust has eaten through the grinding chamber or housing
- The unit is undersized for how the household cooks
Our process
How a disposal service call goes
Check power and flow
We confirm the unit has power, test the reset and run water to see whether the sink drain itself is restricted.
Diagnose the failure
Jam, seal, motor or drain: we pin down which and explain it in plain language.
Recommend and price
You get the repair or replacement option and the total cost before any work starts.
Fix and test under load
We run the disposal with water and check every connection, including the dishwasher drain, for leaks.
What affects the cost of disposal repair
Freeing a jam or tightening a leaking connection is a short job. Replacing the unit, changing to a different size, repairing a corroded drain trap or clearing a clogged line past the disposal adds time and parts. We give a free phone estimate, then confirm the exact price before we start. Redemption Family Plan members ($175 per year) receive repair discounts along with an annual inspection and priority scheduling.
Care and prevention
How to keep a garbage disposal running
Run cold water before, during and for several seconds after grinding. Feed food gradually instead of all at once. Keep grease, fibrous peels like celery and corn husks, bones, pits and large amounts of rice or pasta out of it, since they either wrap around the plate or swell in the drain. Never put a hand inside; if it jams, cut the power and use the hex key that fits the socket on the bottom of most units.
If your home is on septic, use the disposal lightly, because ground food adds solids to the tank and can shorten the time between pumpings. Our septic system services can advise on what your tank can handle. For wider sink problems, see our sink plumbing repairs.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Why does my garbage disposal hum but not spin?
Something is wedged between the grinding plate and the ring, or the motor bearings have seized. Turn off the power at the switch and breaker, then try turning the plate with the hex key in the bottom of the unit. If it frees up, press reset and test with water running. If it will not move, the unit likely needs a repair or replacement.
Can a leaking garbage disposal be fixed?
It depends where the water comes from. Leaks at the top flange, the drain connection or the dishwasher hose are usually repairable. Water dripping from the bottom or side of the housing means an internal seal has failed, and replacing the unit is normally the better value. We check before recommending either.
Why does my dishwasher back up when the disposal runs?
The dishwasher typically drains through the disposal. If the disposal or the drain line beyond it is partly blocked, water has nowhere to go and pushes back into the dishwasher. Clearing the line and checking the hose routing usually solves it. Our dishwasher plumbing service covers the hookup side.
Is it okay to pour coffee grounds or eggshells down the disposal?
In small amounts they grind, but both tend to settle in the trap and drain line, where they build into a dense sludge. It is better to put them in the trash or compost. The disposal handles soft food scraps best, washed through with plenty of cold water.
