Toilet repair in Cortez, FL often starts at the floor
A toilet is simple. The connection between it and a decades-old drain is where things go wrong.
Plenty of calls for toilet repair in Cortez, FL involve the tank: worn flappers, failing fill valves and handles that stick. Those are quick fixes. In older village homes, though, the bigger issue is often underneath, where a corroded closet flange sits on top of an original cast iron drain.
When the flange rusts or breaks, the toilet can no longer be held down firmly. It starts to rock, the wax seal fails and water seeps out under the base, sometimes for months before the subfloor softens. Salt air also corrodes the metal supply stop and the closet bolts, which is why we usually replace them on any install.
We repair what is wrong, explain what we saw underneath, and tell you honestly whether a repair or a new toilet is better value.

Cortez questions
Toilet Repair and Installation in Cortez: common questions
Why does my toilet rock on the floor?
Usually the flange underneath is loose, corroded or broken, or the floor around it has softened from a slow leak. Rocking breaks the wax seal, which leads to leaks and odors. Shimming only hides the problem. In older Cortez homes we often find a rusted flange on a cast iron drain that needs repair before the toilet can be reset.
Why does my toilet keep running?
The most common causes are a worn flapper that lets water leak into the bowl, a fill valve set too high so water runs into the overflow tube, or a chain that catches. These are inexpensive fixes. A running toilet can waste a large amount of water, so it is worth sorting out quickly. See our toilet repair and installation page for more.
Can you install a toilet I have already bought?
Yes. We install toilets customers have chosen themselves, as long as the rough-in measurement matches your drain location. Check the distance from the wall to the center of the floor bolts before buying. If you are unsure, call us and we will help you confirm it.
Is a toilet that will not stop overflowing an emergency?
If it is overflowing and you cannot stop it, turn the supply valve behind the toilet clockwise to shut it off. If the valve is seized or water is coming up from the drain, call our Cortez emergency line at (941) 541-7473, because that can point to a main line blockage.
What can I do about a clogged toilet before calling a plumber?
Use a flange plunger with firm, steady strokes, and stop flushing if the bowl is already full. Avoid chemical drain cleaners, which can damage older pipes and splash back. If the toilet clogs repeatedly, or other drains gurgle when you flush, the blockage may be further down the line and needs a professional look.
