Living on a barrier island is a dream, but it presents some very real technical challenges for mechanical appliances. The salt air is relentless. Think about it this way. If you are trying to boil a pot of water on the stove but you put a thick brick between the burner and the pot, it is going to take forever and waste a lot of energy. That is exactly what is happening inside a neglected tank. Your heating elements have to work twice as hard to push heat through that sediment “brick,” which eventually leads to the metal fatiguing and the tank springing a leak. In an island environment, a small leak can quickly turn into a full emergency plumbing services situation if that saltwater-saturated air has already weakened your floor joists or baseboards.
