Garbage disposal repair in Sarasota, FL, done with the whole sink in mind
A disposal sits between your sink and a drain line that may be decades old. Both matter when it stops working.
Most disposal calls start with one of three symptoms: the unit hums but will not turn, it trips its own reset and shuts off, or water appears in the cabinet underneath. Each has a different cause, and only some are worth repairing. For garbage disposal repair in Sarasota, FL, we check the unit, its connections and the drain it empties into, because a disposal that seems weak is sometimes perfectly healthy and draining into a partly blocked line.
That last point matters here. Many older Sarasota homes have cast iron kitchen branches that have narrowed with scale over the years. Ground food catches on that rough interior and builds up, so a disposal backing up into the sink may really be a drain cleaning job.
When repair makes sense, we repair. When the unit is worn out or leaking from its body, we explain the replacement options and give you an upfront price before any work begins.

Try this first
Safe checks before you call
These are worth a try, as long as the power is off before your hands go anywhere near the unit.
Cut the power
Turn off the wall switch and, ideally, unplug the unit or switch off the circuit. Never reach into the grinding chamber.
Press the reset
Most units have a small red reset button on the bottom. If it has popped out, press it once and try again with cold water running.
Free the flywheel
Many models accept a hex key in the center of the underside. Working it back and forth can free a jam from below.
Call if it repeats
If it jams again, trips repeatedly or leaks, stop there. Repeated resets can burn out the motor.
Repair or replace
When a Sarasota disposal is worth fixing
Usually repairable
- A jam from a bone, pit or utensil
- A leak at the sink flange or drain connection
- A loose or failed dishwasher connection
- A slow drain caused by a clog beyond the unit
Usually time to replace
- Water leaking from the body of the unit itself
- A motor that hums but will not turn after the jam is cleared
- Repeated tripping with nothing caught inside
- Heavy rust or corrosion on the housing
Keep it running
What not to feed a disposal
Grease and oil
It flows through warm, then sets up in the drain line further down. Wipe pans into the trash instead.
Fibrous scraps
Celery, corn husks and onion skins wrap around the grinding parts and form mats in the trap.
Starchy foods
Rice, pasta and potato peels swell into a paste that clogs older, narrowed pipe quickly.
Hard items
Bones, fruit pits and shells jam the flywheel and wear the grinding ring.

Sarasota questions
Garbage Disposal Repair in Sarasota: common questions
Why does my garbage disposal hum but not spin?
Usually something is jammed between the flywheel and the grinding ring, or the motor has seized. With the power off, try turning the flywheel from below with a hex key. If it frees up and runs, you are fine. If it hums again with nothing jammed, the motor is likely failing and replacement is the better option.
Should I repair or replace a leaking disposal?
It depends on where the leak is. Leaks at the sink flange, the drain connection or the dishwasher inlet are usually repairable. A leak from the body of the unit means the internal seals have failed, and that is not a sensible repair. We will show you where it is leaking before recommending anything.
Can I use a garbage disposal with a septic system?
You can, but it adds solids to the tank, which means it fills faster and may need pumping more often. Use it lightly and keep grease out. If your Sarasota County home is on septic, our septic tank services can help you plan pumping around how you use the kitchen.
Is my slow kitchen sink the disposal or the drain?
If water stands in both sides of a double sink, the clog is usually in the shared drain beyond the disposal. If only the disposal side is slow, the problem is often in the unit or its trap. We check both, and our Sarasota drain cleaning service clears the line if that is the cause.
