Shower and Tub Plumbing in Venice, FL

Dripping spouts, temperature swings, slow drains and walk-in conversions handled behind the tile, so the bathroom works the way you need it to.

Behind the tile

Shower and tub plumbing in Venice, FL, from valve to drain

What you see is a handle and a spout. What fails is usually the valve, the supply behind it or the drain below.

Most shower and tub plumbing in Venice, FL comes back to three components: the mixing valve inside the wall, the supply lines feeding it, and the drain and overflow at floor level. A drip after the water is off, a sudden temperature jump or a stain on the ceiling below each points to a different one.

Many Venice bathrooms date from the 1960s and 1970s and still have their original valve and galvanized supply. Mineral-heavy water scales the cartridge until the handle stiffens and the shower drips. When we replace a valve in a bathroom like that, it is usually worth renewing the old pipe right behind it at the same time, which tends to improve pressure too.

Safety is the other common reason for a call. Grab-bar-friendly layouts, a low-threshold shower and a valve that limits scalding all make the bathroom easier to use for years to come.

Valve upgrades

Pressure-balanced or thermostatic shower valve

Both protect against sudden temperature swings. They do it differently.

Pressure-balanced valve

  • Reacts to pressure changes when another fixture is used
  • Single handle controls temperature and flow together
  • Simple, compact and widely used
  • A sensible upgrade from an old two-handle valve

Thermostatic valve

  • Holds the temperature you set, not just the pressure
  • Separate controls for temperature and volume
  • Well suited to households with young children or older adults
  • Works well with multiple shower heads or a hand shower

Venice questions

Shower and Tub Plumbing in Venice: common questions

Why does my shower turn hot or cold when someone flushes a toilet?

Flushing pulls cold water away from the shower, and an older valve cannot compensate, so the mix swings hot. A pressure-balanced or thermostatic valve corrects this. In older Venice homes we often replace the valve and the aging supply right behind it at the same time, so the fix holds and pressure improves.

Can you convert my tub to a walk-in shower?

Yes. We handle the plumbing side of a tub-to-shower conversion, including moving the drain to suit the new shower base, setting the valve at a comfortable height and fitting a scald-limiting valve. Your tile or remodeling contractor can then finish the walls and glass over plumbing that is ready for them.

What does a stain on the ceiling under my bathroom mean?

It usually means water is escaping from the shower valve, the drain connection, the overflow or a failed shower pan. Stop using that shower if possible and call us. We test each component to find the source before any tile or drywall is removed, so the repair opening is as small as it can be.
