Behind the tile

What shower and tub plumbing services really cover

Most of a shower's plumbing is hidden in the wall. When it fails, the first sign is often damage you can see somewhere else.

Our shower and tub plumbing services focus on the working parts: the mixing valve and cartridge that control temperature and flow, the supply pipes that feed it, the spout and showerhead connections, and the drain, overflow and trap below. We repair what is worth repairing and replace what is worn out.

Gulf Coast water is hard on those parts. Minerals settle in cartridges until handles stiffen and temperature control drifts. Showerheads lose spray pattern to scale. In seasonal homes and vacation rentals from Anna Maria Island down to Venice, a valve that drips slowly can leak inside the wall for months before anyone notices a stain on the other side.

When you are updating the bathroom, we also handle the plumbing side of a remodel: relocating a valve, converting a tub to a walk-in shower or adding a handheld or second head. You or your tile contractor handle the finishes; we make sure what is behind them is right.

Supply and valve-body leaks traced and repaired with the smallest practical opening.

Repair or replace

Shower valve repair vs. full valve replacement

A drip does not always mean a new valve. Here is how we decide.

Repair the existing valve

  • Valve body is sound and parts are still available
  • Problem is a worn cartridge, stem, washer or seat
  • No wall opening needed in most cases
  • Keeps your current trim and handle style

Replace the valve

  • Valve body is corroded, cracked or parts are discontinued
  • You want stable temperature from a pressure-balancing or thermostatic design
  • The bathroom is being remodeled and the wall is already open
  • Changing layout, such as moving the controls or adding a second head

Common questions on site

Temperature swings, low pressure and slow drains

A shower that scalds or goes cold when someone runs the kitchen sink usually has an older valve without pressure balancing, or a balancing spool that has seized with scale. Replacing the cartridge sometimes fixes it; in older homes a valve upgrade is the lasting answer. If hot water fades quickly everywhere in the house, the problem may be the heater instead, and our water heater team can check it on the same visit.

Low pressure at one shower usually points to a clogged showerhead, a flow restrictor or a partly blocked cartridge. Low pressure throughout the home is a different conversation that may involve aging pipe. Slow tub drains are most often hair and soap packed in the drain or trap. If the tub gurgles when the toilet flushes, the clog is further down and a full drain cleaning service is the better fit.

Leaks inside the wall deserve quick attention. If you see staining, turn the shower off at the valve stops or the main and avoid using that fixture until it is checked. Persistent hidden water is a job for professional leak detection.

Our process

How a shower or tub service visit works

  1. Diagnose

We test temperature and flow, inspect the valve, spout, drain and overflow, and look for signs of hidden water.

  2. Quote options

You get an upfront price for repair and, where it makes sense, for replacement, before work begins.

  3. Repair or install

Water is shut off, the work is done with the tub and floor protected, and every connection is sealed.

  4. Test and clean up

We run hot and cold, check the drain under load and leave the bathroom as clean as we found it.

Cost factors and simple upkeep

A cartridge swap, a new valve behind an open wall and a tub-to-shower conversion are very different jobs. Price depends on the valve brand and whether parts are available, wall access, how much drain or supply work is involved and whether there is hidden water damage. Call (941) 541-7473 for a free phone estimate; you approve the price before we start.

Between visits, soak showerheads in vinegar to dissolve scale, use a hair catcher on every drain and run water in guest showers weekly so traps stay full. Family Plan members get an annual plumbing inspection that includes a look at valves and drains before small drips become wall repairs.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can a dripping shower valve damage the wall?

A drip from the showerhead usually goes down the drain, so it wastes water rather than damaging the wall. A leak at the valve body or supply connections is different: it runs into the wall cavity and can rot framing and drywall. If you see stains or soft spots near the shower, have it checked promptly.

What plumbing changes come with a tub-to-shower conversion?

Usually the drain has to move or be resized for the shower pan, the valve is raised to a comfortable shower height, and the tub spout is removed or capped. Many homeowners also add a handheld head. We handle that plumbing work and coordinate timing with whoever is doing the tile and glass.

Why does my shower go hot or cold when the toilet flushes?

When the toilet refills it draws cold water, and an older valve without pressure balancing cannot compensate, so the shower briefly runs hot. A pressure-balancing or thermostatic valve holds the mix steady. Sometimes a scaled cartridge in an existing balancing valve is the cause, which is a simpler fix.

Is a slow tub drain a sign of a bigger problem?

Usually it is just hair and soap in the drain or trap, which we can clear quickly. If several fixtures are slow, or the tub gurgles or backs up when other drains run, the blockage is further down the line and needs attention before it causes a backup.
