Behind the tile
Shower and tub plumbing in Palmetto, FL, from the valve back
Every shower hides a mixing valve, two supply lines, a drain and an overflow. Each fails in its own way.
Most shower and tub plumbing in Palmetto, FL comes back to two local facts. The first is hard water. Minerals scale the valve cartridge until it no longer seals or mixes properly, which shows up as a drip from the head, a handle that is hard to turn or a temperature that drifts mid-shower.
The second is age. Bathrooms in many of the older bungalows and block homes still have galvanized supply pipe behind the wall and original tub drains below. Galvanized pipe narrows as it rusts inside, so pressure at the shower drops while the rest of the house seems fine. A new valve on old pipe only fixes half the problem.
So when we open a wall to replace a valve, we look at the pipe feeding it. If it is galvanized, replacing those few feet while the wall is open is usually the sensible choice. How we approach a shower or tub repair
Listen to the symptom
A drip, a temperature swing and a slow drain each point to a different part, so we ask before we arrive.
Check access first
Many valves can be reached through the trim or an access panel. We open tile only when there is no other way.
Price the options
A cartridge swap and a full valve replacement are priced separately, and you choose before we begin.
Test and clean
We run hot and cold, check for leaks at the valve and drain, and leave the bathroom tidy.

Palmetto questions
Shower and Tub Plumbing in Palmetto: common questions
Why does my shower go cold when someone flushes?
The toilet draws cold water away from the shower, and an older valve cannot compensate, so the mix swings hot or cold. A pressure-balancing or thermostatic valve adjusts automatically and keeps the temperature steady. In many cases the existing valve body can take a newer cartridge, which avoids opening the wall.
Should I replace old pipe behind the shower during a remodel?
If it is galvanized, yes. The wall is already open, so the extra cost is small compared with opening new tile later. Galvanized pipe narrows and rusts from the inside, and it is often the reason for weak shower pressure. Copper or PEX in good condition can usually stay. We check before you commit to tile.
What is involved in a tub-to-shower conversion?
The old tub comes out, the drain is moved to suit the new shower base, and the valve and head are reset at shower height. Those plumbing changes have to be finished and tested before the waterproofing and tile. We coordinate with your remodeler so the rough-in is ready on schedule.
Why is my tub draining slowly?
Hair and soap scum caught on the stopper linkage are the usual cause, and hard water makes that buildup stickier. If clearing the stopper does not help, the trap or the line beyond it may be restricted. Our Palmetto drain clearing service handles blockages further down the line.
