Shower and tub plumbing in Plant City, FL: valve, supply or drain?

Most shower complaints trace back to one of three places. Finding the right one first saves tile.

Every call for shower and tub plumbing in Plant City, FL comes down to the mixing valve behind the wall, the pipes that feed it, or the drain beneath it. A drip from the spout, water that suddenly turns cold, or a tub that drains like syrup each point to a different part.

In older homes near the historic downtown, bathrooms often still have galvanized supply lines and original tub drains. Weak flow there usually comes from rusted pipe rather than the shower head. If we are already replacing a valve, it is the right moment to replace the tired pipe behind it so pressure improves too.

On properties fed by a private well, mineral scale is the common enemy. It clogs shower heads, sticks cartridges and wears the seals that keep valves from dripping.

Common fixes

What we repair in Plant City showers and tubs

  • Valve cartridges and rebuilds

Worn cartridges cause drips and stiff handles. Most can be replaced from the front, through the trim plate.

  • Scalding and cold surges

Pressure-balancing valves that no longer balance get rebuilt or replaced so temperature holds steady.

  • Slow and clogged drains

Hair and soap buildup cleared from tub and shower drains, with stoppers and overflows resealed.

  • Leaking spouts and overflows

Loose spouts and failed overflow gaskets can soak the subfloor quietly. We reseal them properly.

  • Remodel rough-ins

New valves and drains set at the right height and depth so tile and glass go over plumbing you can trust. Our shower and bathtub plumbing service page covers remodel work in more detail.

Symptoms decoded

Reading the clues before we arrive

Likely the valve

  • Steady drip from the spout or shower head after shutting off
  • Handle is stiff or spins without changing temperature
  • Water goes cold when someone flushes a toilet
  • Only that one shower has a problem

Likely the pipe or drain

  • Weak pressure at every fixture, not just the shower
  • Rust-colored water when you first turn it on
  • Water stain on the ceiling below the bathroom
  • Tub drains slowly even after cleaning the stopper

Try first

Quick checks you can do yourself

  • Unscrew the shower head and soak it in vinegar to dissolve scale
  • Pull the tub stopper and clear any hair you can reach
  • Check that both hot and cold stops under nearby sinks are fully open
  • Look for loose grout or caulk where the spout meets the wall
  • Note whether the problem happens at every fixture or just one

Plant City questions

Shower & Tub Plumbing in Plant City: common questions

Can you fix a leaking shower valve without removing tile?

In most cases, yes. Cartridges, stems and seals are reached from the front once the handle and trim plate come off. Tile only needs opening if the valve body itself is cracked or leaking inside the wall, and even then we keep the opening as small as practical, often on the far side of the wall where possible.

Why does my shower suddenly turn cold or scalding?

Usually the pressure-balancing part of the valve is worn or clogged with scale. When another fixture draws water, the valve can no longer compensate, so the temperature swings. Rebuilding or replacing the cartridge restores it. If the valve is an older type without balancing, upgrading it is a real safety improvement.

Why is my shower pressure weak in a well-water home?

It could be scale in the shower head or cartridge, a well pressure switch set low, or sediment in the supply lines. Cleaning the head is the first test. If pressure stays low across the house, we look at the well system and supply pipe. Our Plant City faucet repair page covers similar scale problems at sinks.
