Bathrooms on slab
Shower and tub plumbing in Riverview, FL starts with what is under the floor
In most Riverview homes the tub and shower drains run through the concrete slab, which changes how leaks show up and how they are fixed.
Because so many Riverview bathrooms sit directly on concrete, a leaking shower drain does not drip through a ceiling where you would notice it. Water instead soaks into the slab and the wall bottom plates, showing up as loose tile, swollen baseboards or a musty smell in the next room. Shower and tub plumbing in Riverview, FL often begins with figuring out which part is actually leaking.
Builder-grade valves are the other common thread. Many homes in the newer communities came with basic single-handle valves whose cartridges wear out, causing drips from the spout or temperature that drifts mid-shower. In older homes closer to the river, we more often find worn two-handle valves and drains that have been patched before.
Whatever we find, we explain it in plain terms and price the repair before we start. If a supply leak turns out to be under the concrete rather than in the wall, our Riverview slab leak service takes over from there.

Finding the leak
Plumbing leak or a tile and grout problem?
Both cause water damage, but the fix is very different. Here is how we tell them apart.
Points to the plumbing
- Damage appears even when the shower has not been used
- Water near the wall behind the valve or spout
- The water meter moves with all fixtures off
- Leak continues after fresh caulk
Points to tile, grout or pan
- Damage only appears after showers
- Cracked grout lines or failed caulk at the corners
- Loose or hollow-sounding floor tiles in the stall
- Staining along the threshold or curb
Repairs we handle
Common shower and bathtub calls
Dripping spouts and heads
Worn cartridges and seals replaced so the water fully shuts off.
Temperature swings
Pressure-balancing and anti-scald valves repaired or upgraded so a flush elsewhere does not scald or chill.
Slow tub and shower drains
Hair and soap clogs cleared, and drain lines under the slab checked when the slowdown keeps returning.
Diverters and fixtures
Tub spouts that leak while the shower runs, new heads, hand showers and trim kits installed.
Tub-to-shower conversions
Drains and valves relocated to suit a walk-in shower layout, with the slab work planned ahead. More detail is on our shower and bathtub service page.

Planning a remodel
Converting a tub to a walk-in shower
A popular update in Riverview homes, but the plumbing decisions come first.
- The tub drain usually sits in a different spot than a shower drain needs to be
- Moving the drain on a slab means opening concrete under the new pan
- The valve height and position change for a stand-up shower
- A new valve is a good time to add anti-scald protection
- Shut-offs and access panels should be planned before tile goes up

Riverview questions
Shower and Tub Plumbing in Riverview: common questions
Why does my shower get hot or cold when someone flushes?
A flush or a running faucet changes the pressure on one side of the supply. Older or worn valves cannot compensate, so the mix at the showerhead shifts. A pressure-balancing valve, or a new cartridge if your valve already has one, keeps the temperature steady. It is a worthwhile fix, especially for households with children or older adults.
There is a stain on the wall next to my shower. Is it the valve or the pan?
Timing is the best clue. If the stain grows whether or not the shower is used, a pressurized supply line or valve is likely leaking. If it only spreads after showers, the drain, pan or grout is the suspect. We test the supply under pressure and check the drain with water to narrow it down before opening anything.
Can you fix a slow tub drain without opening the floor?
Usually, yes. Most slow tub drains are hair and soap at the stopper or in the trap, which we clear from above. If it keeps slowing down, the issue may be farther down the line under the slab, and a camera can show what is there. For whole-house slowdowns, see our Riverview drain cleaning page.
