Kitchen workhorse

Garbage disposal repair in Largo, FL and what comes after the grinder

A disposal does not make food disappear. It turns it into slurry that still has to travel through your drain line.

Most garbage disposal repair in Largo, FL falls into three groups: units that hum and will not turn, units that leak, and units that seem to work but leave the sink draining slowly. The first two are usually about the disposal itself. The third is often about the pipe it empties into.

Many Largo kitchens still drain through original cast iron or galvanized branch lines inside the wall. Those lines narrow over decades, and ground-up food, coffee grounds and grease settle in the rough spots. A brand-new disposal sending waste into a half-closed pipe will clog just as fast as the old one did.

So when we fix or replace a disposal, we also run water through the branch and tell you if it is struggling. If it needs clearing, you get a price for that separately and decide. Our garbage disposal services page explains how we decide between repair and replacement.

Safe checks you can try first

Always switch the disposal off at the wall, and never put a hand inside the unit.

  • Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit if it has stopped completely
  • Use the hex key slot under the unit to turn the motor and free a jam
  • Check the breaker if pressing reset does nothing
  • Look with a flashlight for a dropped utensil or bottle cap, and remove it with tongs
  • Run cold water for a minute before and after each use
  • If water drips from the bottom of the housing, stop using it and call us

What we fix

Disposal problems we repair or replace

  • Humming, no spin

A jammed flywheel or a failing motor. We free it if it is jammed and tell you honestly if the motor is done.

  • Leaking at the sink flange

Loose mounting ring or failed plumber's putty, resealed so water stops running down the outside of the unit.

  • Leaking from the bottom

A cracked internal seal or housing. This one cannot be repaired, so we size and fit a replacement.

  • Dishwasher connection

Drain hose tie-ins and knockout plugs checked so the dishwasher hookup drains through the disposal properly.

  • New installation

Units sized to your household and how you cook, with new mounting hardware and drain connections.

Disposals, septic and what not to grind

Most of Largo is on municipal sewer, but some older and outlying properties are on septic. A disposal adds solids to a septic tank, so if you have one, ask us about the pumping schedule that goes with it. Our Largo septic tank page covers that side.

Whatever your system, keep grease, fibrous peels, eggshells and coffee grounds out of the disposal. They are the main reason we get called back to the same kitchen.

Largo questions

Garbage Disposal Repair in Largo: common questions

Why does my garbage disposal hum but not spin?

Usually something is wedged between the flywheel and the grinding ring. Turn the power off at the switch, use the hex key under the unit to work it free, then press reset. If it still hums or trips the breaker, the motor or bearings are likely failing and the unit should be replaced.

Is a disposal that leaks from the bottom worth repairing?

Generally not. A leak from the bottom of the housing means an internal seal has failed or the body has corroded, and those parts are not designed to be serviced. We replace the unit and check the drain and dishwasher connections at the same time, so the new disposal starts on a sound setup.

Can I use a disposal if my Largo home is on septic?

You can, but it adds solids to the tank and means more frequent pumping. Use it lightly, avoid grease entirely and keep a record of pump-outs. If you are not sure whether your home is on sewer or septic, ask us and we can help you find out.

What size disposal do I need?

It depends on household size and how much you cook. A small unit suits a light-use condo kitchen, while a family that cooks daily benefits from more power and a better grinding system. We explain the differences and give you options at different price points before installing.
